Brief summary: In April 2006, European Union signed the Directive on waste from the extractive industry, often called the "Tailings and Mine-Waste Directive". As a part of this directive, standard methods were to be established for Acid-Base Accounting and Kinetic testing method standardization handled by CEN/TC-292 / WG8. This group decided that in addition to developing methods, it was also necessary to develop Guidelines to assist mining companies and regulatory agencies in understand the results and how to best utilize the information from such testing. These guidelines focus on mineral-water-gas interactions generating contamination and how mineral-water-gas interactions can slow down contamination generation. This short course discusses the use and the content of these guidelines:

  • Baseline data - site characterization/available information
  • Planning of characterization
  • Sampling protocols
  • Geotechnical properties
  • Chemical/geochemical/hydrological analysis (leach tests, mineralogy, ABA, Kinetic tests, chemical tests)
  • ARD prediction methods
  • Application, interpretation, evaluation
  • Quality assurance/Quality control
  • Closure and monitoring
